The Commentary states: Above, the second part answered concerning the five states, which is now finished. From here on, the third part investigates the five states, comprising three sections: first, asking about death and birth; second, explaining why entering the state without remainder is not mentioned; third, explaining who possesses them. Here, the first section raises a question regarding scope, that the subsumption of dharmas is not exhaustive, and subsequently differentiates the presence or absence of the five according to ordinary beings and noble ones. In the first part, the question comes first, followed by the answer; this is the question. At the exact times of all death and birth, the sixth consciousness is also absent; why then speak only of five states being without the sixth consciousness? One should have stated seven states.
