7.371

The Commentary states: Ordinary beings possess all four, as is evident from the text. Noble ones possess only the latter three, excluding the Non-conceptual Absorption and the [Non-conceptual] Heaven, because only ordinary beings attain them; this is the general statement. Among those three possessed by noble ones, the Buddhas and the bodhisattvas from the eighth ground onward can only possess the one absorption, lacking the two of sleep and swoon, because these are unwholesome dharmas and coarse, shallow dharmas; although they manifest a semblance of sleep, in reality they do not have it. Even the non-learners of the two vehicles also have swoon. Here, distinctions concerning learners and non-learners of the three vehicles, the three realms, and so forth, should all be contemplated in accordance with reason. In the three realms there are swoons of death and birth, because both birth and death are unconscious; otherwise, if there were unconsciousness in their birth and death, the five would not exhaustively subsume them.
