The Commentary states: This means that the sixth, seventh, and eighth vijñānas differ in breadth and narrowness, and their cognitive objects are not the same. Even if they are partially the same, the faculties (indriya) that serve as their respective supports differ in substance and number—namely, the five vijñānas rely on four, the mano-vijñāna relies on three, and so forth, as explained in the fourth [fascicle] above. Although association also depends on the four aspects and so forth, taking them together into a single criterion thoroughly differentiates them, namely, that the supporting faculties differ in substance and number. These supporting faculties have two differences: first, difference in substance, because the faculties of the eye and so forth each have a distinct substance; second, difference in number, because their reliance on four or three is distinct. Just as the vijñānas relying on the five faculties of the eye and so forth each have distinct supporting substances and are mutually unassociated, this serves as an example based on what is commonly accepted as unassociated. This concludes the second part, the specific questions and answers. The third part explains generally the identity and difference of the transforming [consciousnesses].
