The Commentary states: If the eight vijñānas were determinately different, in the tenth fascicle of the ten-fascicle Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra, a verse states: "The eight vijñānas are like the great ocean; water and waves have no distinguishing marks"; and as cited earlier from the fifty-first [fascicle of the Yogācārabhūmi] and so forth, which says: Relying on a single great ocean or mirror surface, multiple waves or images arise without distinction. Second: If they were determinately different, they could not be cause and fruit, because they mutually serve as cause and fruit, and cause and fruit by their very nature are not determinately different, just as hemp does not sprout bean sprouts and the like. Third: Furthermore, all dharmas are like illusions, mirages, dreams, reflections, and so on; therefore we know they have no determinately different nature. This being neither one nor different can be established across the four ultimate truths contrasted with the four conventional truths; this should be considered in accordance with the principle.
