The Commentary states: Because the discriminating consciousness transforms resembling real external objects of self and phenomena to appear—that is, because the discriminating mind transforms into the paratantra nimittabhāga, the marks of a nominal self and phenomena—those discriminated real self and phenomena outside the mind, which are parikalpita, are definitely and entirely non-existent. What is spoken of in the verse as "the discriminated" is parikalpita; because it is discriminated by the discriminating mind, its substance is in reality non-existent. What is the reason? Because in the preceding first and second fascicles, citing reason and scriptural authority, it has already been broadly refuted; since the transforming mind transforms to appear resembling marks, there is no real external object grasped. This concludes the explanation of the third line.
