The Commentary states: Second, cognizing past and future as non-existent accords with the Sautrāntika view; as for the Sarvāstivādins, they have already been refuted above, hence the absence of objects is established. 'Wisdom' refers to the bodhisattva's wisdom. 'Consciousness without an objective support' means a consciousness lacking an objective support, namely all consciousnesses cognizing past and future; these are mind-only. When the bodhisattva cognizes that this consciousness can arise without an object, it is therefore called wisdom. The old rendering states: 'Cognizing non-existence gives rise to thought.' Here we say: in the Mahāyāna, the nimittabhāga must exist; one should say 'the object is not real, yet thought arises,' proving and knowing that there is consciousness-only.
