The Commentary states: From here on is the reasoning, containing four syllogisms (prayogāmāṇa). The first states generally: setting up the thesis (pakṣa), commonly recognized visual and other consciousnesses do not directly cognize colors and other forms separate from themselves; the reason (hetu) is: because they are subsumed under any one of the five; the example (dṛṣṭānta) is: like the others. What is meant here is: take the visual consciousness from among the five consciousnesses. 'Commonly recognized' (prasiddha) excludes what is not mutually accepted, which would be an unestablished subject (asiddha-dharmin): namely, in the Mahāyāna, the visual consciousness of a Buddha of another realm; in the Hīnayāna, the visual consciousness of a Buddha that is not untainted; and the unwholesome visual consciousness of a bodhisattva in their final existence—each has aspects not commonly recognized by oneself or the other. Taking a commonly recognized visual consciousness and not an unestablished visual consciousness, it does not directly cognize color separate from its own visual consciousness. The words 'directly cognize' exclude colors in another's body that are external to one's own mind, as well as the archetype transformed by the eighth consciousness and the like that serves as the archetype for visual consciousness, since that is a remote objective condition (ālambanapratyaya). This concludes the statement of the thesis. The reason is: because it is subsumed under any one among the five consciousnesses; the treatise text is abbreviated here. It is like the remaining four consciousnesses of the ear and so forth: the four consciousnesses of the ear and so forth are subsumed under any one among the five consciousnesses, and do not directly cognize color separate from themselves. Form separate from itself is the domain of visual consciousness; the ear and the rest only cognize sounds and so forth not separate from themselves. Thus, regarding the remaining four consciousnesses mutually, the four syllogisms are also like this. Now, stating it collectively, visual and other consciousnesses are like the others. 'Separate from their own color and so forth' is not specifically designated.
