述曰：此文第三聖教相違難。外問：若無心外實眼、色、等，何緣世尊於契經中說十二處？但應說有意、法處故？舊唯識云：有《阿含》為至教故，引經為難。

The Commentary states: This text is the third objection, based on conflict with the sacred teachings. The opponent asks: If there are no real eyes, forms, and so forth outside the mind, for what reason did the World-Honoured One speak of the twelve āyatanas in the sūtras? He should only have spoken of the mind āyatana and the phenomena āyatana! The older translation of Vijñaptimātra says: "Because the Āgamas are the supreme teaching"—thus they cite the sūtras to raise the objection.
