The Commentary states: If consciousness-only did not exist, there would be no conventional truth (saṃvṛti-satya), because conventional truth is precisely the other-dependent nature. If conventional truth did not exist, neither would ultimate truth (paramārtha-satya) exist, because the ultimate and conventional are established in mutual dependence. Based on the conventional facts of consciousness, there is the ultimate principle of consciousness; because these two are mutually dependent and mutually relative, neither can be missing. Among the fourfold conventional truths, the first three are conventional truth; the fourth conventional truth within conventional truth is the ultimate truth within the conventional; therefore, within the conventional, the ultimate and conventional are certainly mutually dependent. Among the fourfold ultimate truths, the first three are conventional truth, and the fourth is ultimate truth, so within the ultimate, the ultimate and conventional are also mutually dependent. If the four conventionals and the four ultimates are viewed together, all ultimate and all conventional are also mutually dependent. If there were not one conventional, against what would the ultimate be established? Without the ultimate, it is likewise; therefore both truths must exist.
