The Commentary states: Here the author of the treatise explains, first presenting a counter-challenge. If there were only the consciousness of me, one person alone, how could there be distinctions such as ordinary beings and noble ones, superior and inferior, cause and effect across the ten directions? "Distinctions such as" includes various separate dharmas like form and mind. If there were no Buddhas, who would teach for me? If there were no sentient beings, for whom would the Buddha teach? If there were no fruits of nirvāṇa and bodhi, what dharmas would exist? If there were no dharmas, what would I seek? Or if there were no practice, what dharma would one cultivate? If there were no nirvāṇa and so forth, what would one seek? Therefore, the expression "consciousness-only" has a profound intended purport. What is that intended purport?
