The Commentary states: The two words "seed" and "consciousness" exclude what are not seed-consciousness. That is, there is consciousness that is not a seed, which refers to the currently active consciousnesses that are not internal seeds; there are seeds that are not consciousness, which refers to external barley and the like, since they are not the self-part of consciousness. Furthermore, there is consciousness that is not a seed: the various consciousnesses spoken of by the Hīnayāna; seeds that are not consciousness: the primordial nature (prakṛti) posited by the Sāṃkhya, which is the cause of all dharmas, whose substance is not consciousness. Because there is consciousness that is not a seed and seeds that are not consciousness, unlike these seeds which are both seeds and consciousness, both are excluded by establishing the words "seed-consciousness."
