述曰：此中所顯本識中種，非謂持種名為識種，第八識也，以第八識後展轉力現助緣攝，非因緣故。或後第四句，當彼彼分別生中攝故，此中不說。若獨言種，即濫麥等，自性等；若獨言識，即濫現行八識等，故雙言也，即解第一句下四字訖。

The Commentary states: What is shown here are the seeds in the fundamental consciousness; it does not mean that the consciousness holding seeds is called "consciousness-seed," which would be the eighth consciousness, because the eighth consciousness is subsumed under the current auxiliary conditions of successive power later on, not hetupratyaya. Or, it is subsumed under "those various conceptual discriminations arise" in the fourth line later, so it is not stated here. If one merely said "seed," it would be confounded with barley and the like, or primordial nature (prakṛti); if one merely said "consciousness," it would be confounded with the samudācāra of the eight consciousnesses and so on; hence both are stated together. This concludes the explanation of the last four characters of the first line.
