The Commentary states: 'The seven evolving consciousnesses and their mental factors' refers to their respective self-substance divisions, the objective and perceptive divisions manifested by each of them, and the distinct active manifestations of the three natures, three realms, nine stages, contaminated and uncontaminated, karmic retribution and non-retribution, etc., provided only that they are capable of perfuming. However, among these seven consciousnesses and the rest, excluding all wholesome dharmas of the Buddha-fruition, all uncontaminated dharmas in the remaining causal stages and in the non-learners of the two vehicles are capable of perfuming. Among the contaminated, excluding the extremely weak indeterminate: among the four indeterminate, this excludes that born of retribution, yet within that born of retribution there are indeterminate dharmas not subsumed under the other three called 'indeterminate born of retribution', such as dharmic grasping, which can all perfume; it excludes only those produced by karma within the six consciousnesses, because in relation to other indeterminate dharmas they are extremely weak, and it also excludes the eighth consciousness. Whatever is produced by karma is entirely incapable of perfuming. Having excluded one each from the contaminated and uncontaminated, all remaining active perceptive and objective divisions, both contaminated and uncontaminated, perfume the root consciousness to generate their own respective seeds of their nature, realm, stage, contaminated, or uncontaminated. These active manifestations are cause-conditions solely in relation to those seeds. Here, the wholesome dharmas of the Buddha-fruition and the extremely weak indeterminate do not perfume to form seeds, as explained in the second fascicle under the four criteria for the perfumer and the perfumed.
