The Commentary states: The word 'category' (piṇḍa/varga) applies to both mind and mental factors. For this category of the eighth consciousness, whether in the causal or fruitional stage, the presence or absence of this remote objective condition is indefinite. In the causal stage, it transforms others' physical bases because they can be utilized; it does not transform others' faculties or seeds because they cannot be utilized and because they do not exist after death. In the realm of form, transformation relies on others; in the formless realm, it does not; thus in the causal stage it is indefinite. In the Buddha fruitional stage, it can apprehend unconditioned dharmas, dharmas of the three times, and so forth; therefore its presence or absence is indefinite. In the causal stage, the five mental factors rely solely on what is transformed by the cittarāja as their archetype, because the cittarāja can only transform real dharmas. In the Buddha fruit, although the five mental factors apprehend the past, future, and so forth, they also rely on what is transformed by the cittarāja as their archetype; lacking independent power, they are similar to the causal stage. Although the text speaks generally here using the word 'category', mental factors are not [identical in this regard].
