The Commentary states: Here there are two explanations. First: only from the explanation of the four conditions on the basis of the fifteen bases downward is termed 'supplementary discussion'; the rest above is the main treatise, because in the text that explains the dharmas produced by conditions, the conditions capable of producing should be explained, so the four conditions are the main treatise. Second: from the four conditions downward is entirely subsumed under supplementary discussion; although it explains what is produced by conditions, it did not intend to analyze conditions. Now, based on what follows in this fascicle, since it takes the mutual relations of condition-produced dharmas acting as conditions in greater or lesser degrees as the main treatise, we know that the four conditions are the main treatise. If one does not determine the entity, how can one explain the function? These subtleties have perhaps been heard before, or perhaps were not understood previously; later scholars should examine their meaning carefully. However, according to the Yogācāra and so forth, what is obtained by a person is taken as the fruit of purposive effort. Yet in principle it does not bar other dharmas; hence both masters are correct, and either can be used as appropriate. Furthermore, whether these ten causes are sāsrava or anāsrava, conditioned or unconditioned, bound or unbound to the three realms, abandoned by seeing or not, should all be contemplated in accordance with reason. In the preceding question, both conditions and production were asked about; although conditions have already been explained, production has not yet been explained. Below, production is explained. Herein there are two parts: first, distinguishing the production of actual states and seeds; second, summarizing and concluding the explanation. In the first there are two parts: first, distinguishing the production of actual states; second, distinguishing the production of seeds. In the production of actual states: first, distinguishing seed-production; second, distinguishing actual-production. In seed-production and actual-production there are each two parts: first, defiled; second, pure.
