The Commentary states: If the succeeding takes the preceding moment as an objective condition, then among the eight classes of consciousness of one's own stream viewed in relation to one another, the preceding seven may also serve as objective conditions for the eighth, because the preceding seven consciousnesses can all perfuse and produce the seeds of the eighth's nimittabhāga and darśanabhāga. That is to say, the preceding five consciousnesses serve as the perfuming agents that produce the seeds of the eighth's nimittabhāga (such as form), and are thus objective conditions for the eighth's darśanabhāga; the seventh consciousness serves as the perfuming agent that produces the seeds of the eighth's darśanabhāga, and is thus an objective condition for its svasaṃvittibhāga. Seeds of the svasaṃvittibhāga and so forth generate the svasaṃvittibhāga and so forth, and this should likewise be understood accordingly. If the sixth consciousness cognizes the darśanabhāga and nimittabhāga of the eighth and perfuses seeds, it perfuses seeds of both divisions; if it cognizes empty space, citta, caitasikas, and so forth as its nimittabhāga, it also perfuses seeds that produce the marks of empty space and so forth, but is not that which perfuses seeds that produce the active nimittabhāga and darśanabhāga of that eighth consciousness, because the eighth does not cognize empty space and so forth. Among these seven consciousnesses viewed in relation to the eighth's nimittabhāga and darśanabhāga, a fourfold proposition (catuṣkoṭi) should be constructed; the sixth consciousness possesses the latter two propositions, which can be understood through reason. These are two points of difference from the previous master; the sixth viewed in relation to the seventh, and so forth, should be known by analogy with this.
