Third: grasping citta and caitasikas, because all five-aggregate dharmas are not separate from these two. Fourth: root and branch, which means grasping present fruits. The eighth consciousness is the root of all ripenings, and is therefore called "root"; the ripenings in the other consciousnesses are called "branches", as they are branch fruits of the eighth consciousness. Thus, this is grasping the two ripenings, meaning attachment, grasping, and cognitive apprehension. Alternatively, the category of the general retribution of the eighth consciousness is called the root, and the categories of the particular retributions of the other consciousnesses are called the branches, which encompass all dharmas completely and exclusively exclude [non-]ripening, because it is extremely narrow.
