'Six sense bases' (ṣaḍ-āyatana) is a dvigu compound (number-bearing compound); 'base' means the doorway of generation and growth, and their entities and categories differ into six kinds; because it bears the word 'six', it is a number-bearing compound. In 'aging-and-death' (jarā-maraṇa), the meaning of alteration is the meaning of aging; the meaning of extinction and non-existence is the meaning of death. The former is the mark of difference; the latter is the mark of cessation. Each having its own referent, it is like name-and-form, hence a dvandva compound. That it does not speak of the mark of difference but rather says 'aging' is a deprecatory term; it is also a dvandva compound, because aging and death are distinct.
