The Commentary states: There are two as above, namely birth and old age and death, setting forth their essence. 'Because of being directly generated by craving, grasping, and becoming' explains the name 'generated'. Although they are also obtained by the preceding projecting and projected [factors], the reason they are not named 'projected fruits' is like the five seeds not being named 'projecting causes' but only 'projected'—this should likewise be so. And because they are directly generated by the preceding craving and the rest, they are only named 'generated' and not named 'projected fruits'. They are altogether the fruits of both generating and projecting causes, but because they are generated by proximate causes they receive this name. This altogether constitutes the first section setting forth the essence and explaining the name.
