The Commentary states: The future stage of the manifest result, being actual active manifestations, makes its differentiated marks easy to understand; therefore, birth and old age/death are collectively established as two branches to manifest the three kinds of suffering. The *Pratītyasamutpāda-sūtra* states above: "'World-Honoured One! If birth and old age/death have name-and-form, the six sense bases, contact, and feeling as their marks, for what reason is the name "birth and old age/death" displayed for this generated body?' The World-Honoured One answered: 'It is to reveal that such marks of the generated body constitute the marks of suffering by having three kinds of suffering. Birth reveals the suffering of conditioned existence (saṃskāra-duḥkhatā); old age reveals the suffering of change (vipariṇāma-duḥkhatā); and death reveals the suffering of suffering itself (duḥkha-duḥkhatā).'" This will be known below. This discusses it in terms of the desire realm; in the form and formless realms, they instead reveal the three characteristics, namely arising, alteration, and cessation. Question: If so, and the stage of the result reveals only the three kinds of suffering so that only two branches are stated, why is it further said that at the time the result arises, the five [branches] beginning with consciousness are stated in order to make the stages known?
