The Commentary states: If a sprout of existence is to arise, it must be repeatedly watered, just as in irrigating a field. Here, provisionally based on the earlier and later stages of craving, it is divided into the two: craving and grasping; in fact, there are many active afflictions of craving. The eighth fascicle of the *Daśabhūmika-sūtra* states: "The increase of craving is named grasping." Thus, the initial is named craving and the later is named grasping. The function of initiating karma cannot be repeated, so a single ignorance is established, just as when a single sprout arises it cannot arise again; but when water waters and moistens, it can be said to occur repeatedly. Question: Earlier it was stated that the essence of grasping includes the remaining afflictions; why is it said here and in the *Daśabhūmika*, etc., to be the increase of craving?
