The Commentary states: As appropriate, that craving also takes as its condition the feeling of the stage of future birth, whether it be feeling active at the same time or feeling as seeds from a previous time; there is no contradiction with reason. Here, saying that it "also takes as its condition the feeling of the stage of future birth" clarifies that when dying in one's own stage and being reborn in one's own stage, craving definitely relies on the same stage; and when being reborn from a different stage into a different stage, it also definitely relies on the same stage [of rebirth]; therefore it says "also". Moreover, the feeling of the current dwelling place also serves as a condition for craving, just as that ignorance serves as a condition across different stages; this is not the branch of feeling itself, but has the sense of a remote condition. Question: If the affliction that initiates karma serves as a condition across different stages, should the affliction that moistens rebirth also do so across different stages? Answer: Initiating karma is a condition of co-arising (samutthāna-hetu) and is remote, so it extends across different stages; moistening rebirth is a cause of generation (janma-hetu) and is proximate, so it pertains only to its own stage. Question: If feeling conditioning craving is remote and extends across different stages, does karmic formations conditioning consciousness serve as a condition across different stages? Answer: Feeling conditioning craving is a distant initiating cause, and being remote, it extends across different stages; karmic formations conditioning consciousness is a fruitional cause (vipāka-hetu), and being proximate, it pertains only to its own stage. Question: Why are consciousness and so forth, birth and so forth, distinguished and combined differently, whereas karmic formations and existence are both combined into one? Answer: When karma is in the projecting cause, its productive activity is named "karmic formations"; moistened and transformed by craving and grasping, it is named "existence"; there is no distinct substantial entity, and therefore neither is divided. Question: If existence were only karma, it would be single like karmic formations; but existence includes non-karma, so why is it not divided? Answer: Although existence includes both karma and non-karma, because both are proximate to having the result of subsequent existence, their meaning and potency are equal, and they are collectively named "existence"; it is not solely like karmic formations which have no non-karmic nature; therefore it is not divided. Question: Why is it that before being moistened it is named "karmic formations", and after being moistened it is named "existence"? Answer: Productive activity is named "karmic formations"; because its initial creation is manifest, it is initially named "karmic formations"; possessing results is named "existence"; because it is evident only after being moistened, the name "existence" is established later. Question: Why are karmas threefold, yet combined under the names of karmic formations and existence, while the moistening affliction is just one craving, yet divided into craving and grasping? Answer: With a single moistening the result does not arise, so only then are craving and grasping divided into two; a single karma can evoke a result, so karmic formations and existence are combined and established. As for the ninth, fixing the lifetimes to refute erroneous views: according to the Sarvāstivādins and others, the two causes and five results, and the three causes and two results, are definitely not in the same lifetime; now, in this school...
