The Commentary states: Fourth, the category distinguishing unique and mixed marks. The three links of ignorance, craving, and grasping are called 'unique marks.' 'Unique' means that their own substance constitutes the link, without being intermingled with other links. Although in grasping there is the intensification of craving, it is not that craving transforms into intensified greed, and moreover there are other factors. 'The rest are mixed marks' means that formations and the five of consciousness, etc., are transformed and named existence, birth, and so on; thus existence, birth, etc., are also named 'mixed,' because their substance is not distinct, being constituted by relying on others. Fascicle 10 merely says: 'Three are unique marks, and formations, etc., are mixed marks.'
