The Commentary states: Ninth is the section on classification by the three realms. All twelve [links] apply to the three realms; although they all apply to the three realms, some are partial and some are complete. The desire realm includes the twelve completely; the form and formless realms include the twelve partially. Why is this? The desire realm encompasses both defilement and purity; name-and-form possesses all five aggregates; the six sense bases possess all [six] consciousnesses and so forth, up to feeling possessing four feelings and so forth. In the form and formless realms it is not so: defilement is entirely absent, the formless realm lacks form and so on, and they lack three feelings and so on. Because sorrow feeling is not a karmic retribution, it is not discussed here. Therefore the tenth fascicle of the Great Treatise states that the desire realm possesses all links completely because they arise together in concurrence, while the form and formless realms possess each [link] partially; that aging exists there has already been explained above.
