The Commentary states: The intention of the first master is that craving and grasping are severed exclusively by cultivation, because craving that yearns for future rebirth and moisturizes rebirth is clearly not severed by seeing, since craving and so forth severed by seeing arise conditioned by views and so forth. The fifth fascicle of the Abhidharma-samuccaya states: "Nine kinds of minds at death: when born into the three realms from the three realms, each moisturizes rebirth with minds each possessing three kinds." It states that innate craving together with innate ignorance is severed exclusively by cultivation, and the link of grasping is merely the augmentation of craving, not taking the four graspings. The mention of "four graspings" is a general explanation of the meaning of grasping, not what is subsumed under the link of grasping. The remaining nine links apply to both severance by seeing and severance by cultivation, severed in accordance with their karmic causes; that indeterminate dharmas are not severed exclusively by cultivation will be known below.
