8.55

述曰：下正解之。初解能生；後解方便。言菩薩地說牽引因，除業習氣及外無記因，生起因中亦爾，亦除業等，彼非因緣故。問曰：何以得知生起因中有業種也？論文二處皆言此因是能生因，不說有增上緣故？

The Commentary states: Below is the direct explanation: first explaining the productive [cause], then explaining the auxiliary [cause]. It says that the *Bodhisattvabhūmi* speaks of the traction cause, excluding karmic impressions and external indeterminate causes; and it is the same within the generative cause, which also excludes karma and so forth, because they are not direct causes (*hetupratyaya*). The question is asked: How is it known that there are karmic seeds within the generative cause? The text of the treatise states in two places that this cause is a productive cause, and does not mention that it has the sovereign condition (*adhipatipratyaya*).
