The Commentary states: The explanation of transformation [saṃsāra] below has five parts: first, identifying its essential nature; second, explaining the name and, in connection with that, distinguishing the persons who attain it; third, questions and answers; fourth, contrasting and distinguishing the two [kinds of] death; and finally, a general conclusion. This [first passage] identifies its essential nature. That is to say, it is the superior, subtle maturation result brought about by the previous undefiled, subsequent, conceptual karma, assisted by the power of the previously mentioned cognitive hindrances acting as conditions. Compared to [the birth and death of] segmented limitation, this is increasingly pure and wondrous, increasingly subtle, increasingly radiant and clean, and without fixed boundaries; and because it is not within the realm of worldly beings or the two vehicles who have not redirected their minds, it is called 'superior.' It is exclusively wondrous and exclusively subtle, and is solely the realm of bodhisattvas, of their own persons, and of the Buddhas; hence it is called 'subtle.' The eightieth [fascicle of the Yogācārabhūmi] states that even the devas and so forth cannot see it. This has the maturation morally indeterminate five aggregates as its self-nature, and among the five results it is subsumed under maturation results. This directly identifies the essential nature of this saṃsāra. Why is it that segmented limitation is called the result of the three realms, whereas this death is not said to be the result of any specific realm? Regarding the three realms, it does not belong definitively to any particular realm; as explained previously at the end of the seventh [fascicle], there were already two explanations, so it is not said to be of the three realms. Unlike the death of segmented limitation, which definitively belongs to the karma of this or that realm, this death of transformation does not belong to undefiled karma; how this is sustained in its mental modes will be understood below. Why is it called the death of transformation, and why is it said to be inconceivable?
