Those prior to the seventh stage who are of definitive lineage include those who undergo this nature; therefore, here it is said that the two vehicles' aśaikṣas and those from the eighth stage onward undergo transformation birth, stating this because it is definitive. The first three fruits and those prior to the eighth stage do not definitively undergo transformation saṃsāra, so they are not mentioned; these three kinds are stated because they are definitive. There is an explanation in the West, as already briefly explained at the end of the preceding fascicle, that because there are bodhisattvas who are already capable of subduing all afflictions in the first stage, they attain it in the first stage, as explained regarding the meditative attainment of cessation; or some only attain it up to the eighth stage. That is to say, some undergo only segmented limitation and not transformation, namely all ordinary beings and those of the four fruits of definitive lineage; some undergo only transformation and not segmented limitation, namely the two vehicles' aśaikṣas of indefinite lineage and bodhisattvas from the eighth stage onward; or some undergo both segmented limitation and transformation, namely the first three fruits of indefinite lineage and those prior to the eighth stage—this clause is because of their mastery, while their afflictions are not yet exhausted. If one relies on the saṃsāra brought about by the afflictive hindrances and contaminated karma, it is named segmented limitation, which is coarse and easy to know; if it is the saṃsāra brought about by the undefiled, aided by cognitive hindrances, it is named transformation, which is subtle and difficult to know. Therefore, prior to the eighth stage, undergoing the sufferings of the three evil destinies on behalf of sentient beings is a real body, which is easy to know; from the eighth stage onward, it extends even to transformation bodies, just as the Buddha creates transformation bodies to rescue living beings. The Da zhidu lun states: 'In the eighth stage, shedding the insect body' refers to shedding segmented limitation.
