The Commentary states: This answers in accordance with the third, correct doctrine among the previous three meanings of seeds. Before hearing the correct Dharma, the uncontaminated seeds are merely established of themselves from beginningless time, never having been perfumed to make them increase; this is called the original gotra. 'Xing' (nature) is substance; 'xing' (clan/lineage) is category. This means that from original nature, one abides in the distinction of this category of bodhisattva seeds, which does not exist only from the present; hence it is named the 'gotra residing in original nature' (prakṛtistha-gotra). Fascicle 35, the *Bodhisattvabhūmi*, states: 'Beginningless and naturally so, the excellence of the six sense-bases is named the seed residing in original nature.' This exactly agrees with this; it is precisely the abiding of the gotra.
