The Commentary states: This means that between name and referent, first, their intrinsic nature is shared; second, their differences are shared; therefore, one combines the two kinds of intrinsic nature and two differences of name and referent into a joint contemplation. The first two are name and referent; the latter two are intrinsic nature and differences. For name and referent, 'seeking' is raised, showing that 'seeking' (xun) means searching (qiu); these two implicitly include examining. For intrinsic nature and differences, 'examining' is raised, showing that 'examining' (si) means observing (cha), inquiring (tui), and contemplating (guan). These two implicitly include seeking; hence, various treatises say 'seeking into names and referents, observing names and referents', and so forth. The earlier citation of the Yogācārabhūmi on separate and joint contemplation means that separate contemplation is the contemplation of names and referents, and joint contemplation is the contemplation of intrinsic nature and differences. This is the third, presenting the dharmas cultivated. Below this is the fourth, explaining the names of the four stages.
