The Commentary states: Ascertaining the non-existence of the preceding grasped object and complying with the non-existence of the subsequent grasping subject is called the samādhi of ascertainment and compliance. Compliance encompasses two kinds: one is called delighting compliance, and the second is called ascertainment compliance. If these three grades are all named patience, because both the lower and higher grades ascertain with patience, the name 'ascertainment and compliance' is established. First, the name 'ascertainment and compliance' applies to the initial and subsequent, while the words 'delight' and 'compliance' apply solely to medium patience; therefore, taking them together, it is merely called the samādhi of ascertainment and compliance. Furthermore, regarding their distinction: lower patience is called ascertainment patience, because it ascertains the non-existence of the grasped object; medium patience is called delighting compliance, because it delights in the absence of the grasping subject and complies with cultivating that; when higher patience arises, it is merely called ascertainment compliance, because it ascertains the non-existence of the grasping subject and complies with contemplating that. Therefore, combining the three patiences, it is called the samādhi of ascertainment and compliance. Patience is wisdom; samādhi conjoined with ascertainment and compliance is called the samādhi of ascertainment and compliance. The beginning and end should be understood in accordance with this explanation. Decisively ascertaining and holding to the absence of the grasped object is the stage of lower patience; complying with, delighting in, and being patient with the absence of the grasping subject is the stage of medium and higher patience: compliance applies to both medium and higher, while delight applies solely to medium.
