The Commentary states: The Mahāyānasaṃgraha says: "Entering the samādhi of one portion of the true meaning" means confirming the nonexistence of the grasped, which is called "one portion." Fascicle eight of the Abhidharma-samuccaya-vyākhyā says: "The samādhi of entering one portion and conforming." That treatise explains: "Entering one portion" is because of the one-directional acquiescence and understanding regarding the nonexistence of the grasped. In the present text, this is the stage of lower patience. "Conforming to one portion" is because of conforming and penetrating to the basis regarding the nonexistence of the grasping [subject]. In the present text, this is the subsequent stages of patience; thus, that text is superior to designations such as that in the Mahāyānasaṃgraha. However, it is not like the present text, because that [treatise] does not separately divide the two stages of middle and upper patience. That is, middle patience merely delights in and conforms to cultivating the nonexistence of the grasping [subject] without yet confirming [its] nonexistence; upper patience confirms the nonexistence of the grasping [subject], and is thus distinct from the middle. Although that treatise has the words "conforming to one portion," it does not separately divide delighting in conforming and confirming and conforming. When confirming patience and conforming patience of the lower, middle, and upper grades are combined, these three stages are collectively designated as patience among the four wholesome roots. Therefore, the treatise says: "At the time of confirmation, conforming, and patience, they are collectively designated as patience." Patience applies to two places, namely confirming patience and conforming patience; thus, combining them, the treatise says "at the time of confirmation, conforming, and patience," and these three stages are collectively named patience among the wholesome roots.
