The Commentary states: As for being named "confirming and conforming," it confirms that the prior grasped is nonexistent, conforms to the subsequent nonexistence of the grasping [subject], and confirms the nonexistence of the grasping [subject]; therefore, the designation "confirming and conforming" is established. This explains the specific designations of the three stages. Because these three stages acquiesce in the emptiness of the object and the emptiness of consciousness, they are also named patience. However, although middle patience does not confirm, it conforms to and delights in acquiescence, and thus is also named patience. Since both direct patience and conforming patience are named patience here, one cannot object: "The stage of the summit and so forth also conforms to lower patience; it should be named patience." In the beginning there is no patience yet; because middle patience has patience both before and after, the name "patience" is established, and being of that category of patience, it is also named patience, unlike heat and so forth.
