The Commentary states: Bodhisattvas at this stage also train in cognizing both the established truths and the non-established truths. Either they collectively cognize one real tathatā, or distinctly engage in the distinct and collective three minds of the non-established two emptinesses; they do not exclusively cultivate the differentiated contemplation of the four truths. The Śrīmālā-sūtra speaks of constructed and unconstructed four truths: the unconstructed four truths are precisely the non-established; those that have distinctions and conventional designations are called established, while those free from distinctions and transcending conventional designations are non-established. 'Established' has the meaning of 'posited'. If bodhisattvas at this stage do not engage in both kinds of contemplation during the preparatory stage, they could not induce the arising of the two kinds [of realization], the true and the reflective seeing, nor could they subdue those of the two vehicles. In order to enter the two emptinesses and contemplate the principle of tathatā, they correctly contemplate the non-established; in order to give rise to investigative contemplation, arouse the path of superior progress, mature the Buddha-Dharma, and subdue the two vehicles, they also contemplate the established. However, the tenets of the two vehicles only speak of cultivating the established contemplation of the four truths; bodhisattvas do not do this exclusively. Now it is said that they also cultivate the non-established contemplation of the emptiness of persons, but this is not identical to the bodhisattva. Bodhisattvas cultivate both emptinesses; to highlight the inferiority of the two vehicles, it is not mentioned for them. Moreover, those of the two vehicles also cultivate solely the established, unlike bodhisattvas. The practice and wisdom of bodhisattvas are deep and broad, whereas theirs are not.
