述曰：五十八末說忍、智合者，謂八忍合為四，俱忍類故；八智合為四，俱智品故。或法忍、法智八合為四，緣如為境、以類同故。品者，品類義，故得為此解。類忍、類智八合為四，緣智為境亦類同故。此依惠別，俱定唯一，廣如彼抄說。

The Commentary states: At the end of fascicle 58, it explains that the combining of patience and cognition means: combining the eight patiences into four, because they all belong to the category of patience; combining the eight cognitions into four, because they all belong to the class of cognition. Alternatively, the eight of dharma-patiences and dharma-cognitions are combined into four because they take tathatā as object and are similar in kind; 'class' (varga/pin) means category of type, hence this interpretation is admissible. The eight of subsequent patiences and subsequent cognitions are combined into four because they take cognition as object and are also similar in kind. This is by distinction of wisdom (prajñā); meditative stabilization (samādhi) is uniquely single for all of them, as extensively explained in that commentary.
