The Commentary states: Warmth (ūṣmagata) and the rest are bound to the form realm; this contemplation of common characteristics can induce warmth and the rest, because contemplation can generate cultivation. This contemplation views all conditioned phenomena as impermanent, all phenomena as tathatā, etc.; hence it is most superior and called contemplating common characteristics. It does not mention contemplating specific characteristics, because specific characteristics are subsumed under the lower and middle [grades], not yet broadly taking objects. Although tathatā is also the specific characteristic of all phenomena, before realization it is merely a common characteristic; prior to the path of seeing, this function is the most fierce. 'Fierce' means sharp and superior, and it is singled out as clear realization. Warmth and the rest cannot broadly discriminate phenomena, but only contemplate the non-existence of the grasped, etc. Although they also contemplate all phenomena as non-self, etc., they mostly contemplate with specific limits. Furthermore, speaking generally of the three vehicles, at the stage of the two vehicles they only contemplate the individual mental modes of the four truths, which is inferior to contemplation—that is, various reflections and various examinations are called broad discrimination. Warmth and the rest lack this capability, and being inferior to contemplation, are not established as clear realization. Although the path of seeing and the rest are also unable to broadly discriminate phenomena, because they take true reality as object, they are established as clear realization. This again differs from those, as they have not yet realized reality. Fascicle 71 states: 'The four roots of goodness are not clear realization, because they are its outflow.'
