Master Gopa says: Homage through the three actions is paid because, wishing to manifest that the Great Master possesses the divine eye, one pays homage through physical action; because he possesses the divine ear, one pays homage through vocal action; because he possesses the knowledge of others' minds, one pays homage through mental action. Furthermore, because one generates the wholesome [roots] that are complete in the three actions, one pays homage through the three actions. As taught in the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya: in the light and at a distance, one must pay homage with the body, because one can be seen; in the dark and close by, one must pay homage with speech, because one can be heard; in the dark and again at a distance, one must pay homage with the mind, because one can neither be seen nor heard. Moreover, to manifest the cause for paying homage to the three wheels, one must pay homage through the three actions.
