The Commentary states: "Marks" refers to having marks; "application" refers to effort. Asvabhāva says: It is because all that has marks and all preparatory applications are unable to move the mind of this ground. Although in the seventh ground all marks are unable to move it because they do not become active, nevertheless it does not operate spontaneously at will, and because there is preparatory application, there are still afflictions. In the eighth ground it operates spontaneously at will, does not rely on preparatory application, and because there is no effort, there are also no afflictions—this is the distinction between the seventh and eighth grounds. The Daśabhūmika says: "The actions of karmic retribution are fully matured; it is signless and uninterrupted, and is therefore called 'Immovable'." From this ground onward, know clearly that it is signless and not interrupted.
