In refuting the Sarvāstivādins, there are three parts: first, stating their thesis and refuting it in general; second, refuting it specifically; third, concluding it to be false. The specific refutation has three parts: the first is the same as the *Treatise on the Examination of the Object of Cognition* (Ālambanaparīkṣā); the second can be known through inference; the third is an inference, which states: 'Aggregated atoms do not possess a distinct entity or characteristic apart from the original atoms; because they are the atoms of the time when they were not aggregated; just like when they are not aggregated.' The five sensory objects are briefly analyzed through five approaches: first, real versus nominal; second, with or without outflows (sāsrava / anāsrava); third, the three natures; fourth, classification into vipāka and so forth; fifth, classification according to the consciousness that takes them as objects.
