The four right abandonings (samyak-prahāṇa): First, the abandonment through discipline: bringing forth desire and exerting effort in order to abandon unwholesome states that have already arisen. Second, abandonment by abandoning: in order that unwholesome states not yet arisen do not arise. Third, abandonment through cultivation: in order that wholesome states not yet arisen are brought to arise. Fourth, abandonment through protection: bringing forth desire and exerting effort desiring to make wholesome states that have already arisen abide. All are spurred on by vigor, so wisdom of itself can gradually subdue afflictions. Named after their fruits, they are called right abandonings.
