Regarding [the principle that] "the three phenomena turn mutually as cause and effect simultaneously," an objection states: If an old seed giving rise to a new active [consciousness] acts as cause and effect for seed production, and a newly perfumed seed becoming established from the active [consciousness] acts as cause and effect for the active manifestation arising, then if a newly generated seed possesses no productive power and arises solely from the active [manifestation], the power of the newly active manifestation should likewise be subtle—how could it give rise to a new seed? The answer: The conditions for the new and active are completely present, so the new seed is born from it; the new seed has not yet met its conditions, and therefore cannot give rise to an active [manifestation]. The question: If the active manifestation having newly arisen is said to already have its conditions complete, then since the new seed is also newly produced, why is it not said to have its conditions complete? The answer: The new active [manifestation] is capable of perfuming because it possesses the four meanings completely, and so it is said that the active [manifestation] has met its conditions; the new seed has not met with the attraction of preparatory effort (prayoga), and therefore its conditions are not said to be complete—only when attracted by the force of prior preparatory effort can a seed then produce an active [manifestation]. The question: When the four meanings of being capable of perfuming are complete, the active [manifestation] is said to produce the seed; when the six meanings of a seed are fulfilled, it should be said to be capable of producing the active [manifestation]. The answer: Because there is a distinction between meeting and not meeting conditions, as previously explained.
