1.42

證二乘定性者云：「《華嚴》第四十〈世間品〉云：『佛子菩薩摩訶薩於兜率天臨命終時有十種果現，第三於右手掌中放大光明，名「淨境界」，悉能嚴淨大千世界。此世界中若有無漏諸辟支佛覺斯光者，即捨壽命，入於涅槃。若不覺者，光明力故，移置他方餘世界中』」。《莊嚴論》第一卷云：「餘人善根涅槃時盡，菩薩善根不爾」。又云：「三乘眾生由界差別故，種性差別」。《涅槃經》云：「我於經中為諸比丘說一乘、一道、一行、一緣。如是一乘乃至一緣，能為眾生作大寂靜，永斷一切繫縛、愁苦、苦及苦因，令一切眾生至於一有。我諸弟子聞是說已，不解我意，唱言：『如來說：須陀洹乃至阿羅漢皆得佛道』」。又《攝大乘》為十義，故說一乘，引攝不定姓故。

Those who prove the determinate gotra of the two vehicles say: 'The Avataṃsaka, in chapter 40, "Chapter on the World", says: "When the son of the Buddha, the bodhisattva mahāsattva, is about to die in the Tuṣita heaven, ten kinds of fruits appear. Third, from the palm of his right hand he emits a great radiance called 'Pure Realm', which can completely adorn and purify the great trichiliocosm. In this world, if there are any pratyekabuddhas without outflows who perceive this light, they immediately relinquish their lifespan and enter nirvāṇa. If they do not perceive it, by the power of the light they are displaced and placed into other worlds elsewhere."' The Mahāyāna-sūtrālaṅkāra, in fascicle 1, says: 'The roots of wholesomeness of other persons are exhausted at the time of nirvāṇa; the roots of wholesomeness of bodhisattvas are not so.' It also says: 'Due to the distinction among realms, sentient beings of the three vehicles have distinctions among their gotras.' The Nirvāṇa-sūtra says: 'In the sūtras, for the sake of the monks, I spoke of one vehicle, one path, one practice, and one condition. Such one vehicle, up to one condition, can bring great tranquility to sentient beings, permanently severing all fetters, grief, suffering, and causes of suffering, causing all sentient beings to reach the single existence. My disciples, having heard this teaching, did not understand my meaning, and proclaimed: "The Tathāgata says that from srotāpannas up to arhats, all will attain the Buddha path."' Furthermore, the Mahāyānasaṃgraha states that for ten meanings, one vehicle is spoken of, in order to guide and attract those of indeterminate gotra.
