The verse on supports states: 'The five have four, the sixth has two; / The seventh and eighth have one simultaneous support; / As well as the contiguous and causal [supports]; / Each and every one increases by two.' 'The five have four' means that each of the five consciousnesses has four supports: 1. the support conforming to apprehending; 2. the clarifying support; 3. the state support; 4. the support for arising. 'The sixth has two' means that the sixth mental consciousness has two supports: 1. state; 2. support for arising. 'The seventh and eighth have one' means that the seventh and eighth consciousnesses each have one support. 'The seventh has one' refers to the support for arising; 'the eighth has one' refers to the state support. 'Simultaneous support' indicates that what is explained above is subsumed under simultaneous supports (sahabhū-āśraya). 'Contiguous' refers to the immediately antecedent support (samanantara-pratyaya-āśraya). 'Causal' refers to the seed support (bīja-āśraya). 'As well as' indicates that these consciousnesses each add two more supports. 'Each and every one increases by two' means that the five have six, the sixth has four, and the seventh and eighth each have three, as explained earlier in fascicle four.
