地獄八根現行、種子定俱成就，命根既種，如何現成？答：一總說八言成，何必命有現。亦識中種可為命體者名「種」，現能為根者名「現」。又體是「種」，用為根者名「現」。又能持名「種」，所持名「現」。

In the hells, the eight faculties are definitely possessed in both active manifestation and seed; since the life-faculty is a seed, how can it be accomplished in active manifestation? Answer: First, it is spoken of collectively that the eight are accomplished; it is not necessary that life has an active manifestation. Also, what in consciousness can be the substance of life as a seed is called "seed"; what can actively act as a faculty is called "active manifestation." Furthermore, its substance is "seed," and its function as a faculty is called "active manifestation." Furthermore, the ability to maintain is called "seed," and that which is maintained is called "active manifestation."
