Only when one has attained the fundamental dhyāna do defilements then arise. If someone, relying on the preparatory [stage], having severed the nine grades of the desire realm, dies without having attained the fundamental [dhyāna], by what manifest activity does this person moisten rebirth? One explanation: this does not occur; one must attain it before dying. Just as with a stream-enterer in their seventh rebirth, none dies without having attained the fruit of arhatship; their mind attains the fundamental dhyāna and only then dies. Another explanation: it also occurs that one moistens rebirth solely through latencies (anuśaya), as with seeing the truths, because with latencies there is also moistening by manifest activity. This should also be like that. Subduing cultivation[-abandoned defilements] while not subduing seeing[-abandoned defilements]: since defilements of seeing are unwholesome, why do they not induce bad destinies rather than being born in higher realms? If because their power does not operate, why is it not called 'subdued'? Now explaining according to the principle: because their power does not operate, they cannot initiate karma. Even supposing there were some, it is light and not heavy, not a determinate karma, and does not induce rebirth in the desire realm. Only when one properly loathes through the six practices is it called 'subdued'; otherwise, one would fall back. Because defilements are strong and the force of dhyāna power is inferior and weak, lacking the companion of cultivation, being weak it is incapable.
