Among the secondary defilements, wrath and the like, according to what they rely on and what they cognize, and through the power of general and specific defilements, all pertain to the four categories [of the truths]. There are those relying on fewer truths while cognizing more truths, those relying on more truths while cognizing fewer truths, those relying on more and cognizing more, and those relying on fewer and cognizing fewer. The cognitive modes of the latter two can be understood. To which truth's defilements do the first two belong? Should the truth be determined from that which is relied on, or from the cognitive object? Both are not determinate. From this, one should say: what is cognized is precisely what is relied on, because 'conditions' (pratyaya) means relying upon support, and is not the objective sphere (ālambana), because the sphere is indeterminate. There is an opinion: what is relied on is precisely the objective sphere. Taking the objective sphere as what is relied on, one relies upon it and determines the truth from the cognitive object, because what is relied on is indeterminate. There is an opinion: what is relied on and what is cognized are different, as explained in the Commentary. If relying on the first two explanations, there is no obstacle in the first two clauses. If relying on the third explanation, how are the first two clauses [understood]? One explanation states: this certainly does not exist. Another explanation states: it belongs to the truths according to which is predominant. When what is relied on is predominant and the cognitive object is weak, because it is induced closely, it belongs to what is relied on; when the cognitive object is predominant and what is relied on is weak, it belongs to the cognitive object, because it is induced remotely.
