Explanation of the meaning of 'pure' and 'mixed': because of differences in predominance and inferiority, this is explained merely with reference to the direct nimitta-bhāga. If explained according to the reflection (pratibimba) and the archetype (bimba), there are further different explanations: within the reflection, what is transformed by one's own stage is pure; what is induced by the power of supernormal faculties is mixed; when not by supernormal power, the eighth [consciousness] apprehending actual [manifest dharmas] is pure, while apprehending seeds is mixed; in the seventh consciousness, it can be named a reflection, and whether the reflection is pure or mixed is explained in terms of the nature of the darśana[-bhāga] or bimba. For the five consciousnesses, wholesome and unwholesome minds are mixed, while morally neutral minds are pure; for the sixth, when operating together with the five and so forth, it is open [to both]; the phenomena should be inferred by contemplation. Among the conventional and the real, one makes distinctions with reference to the consciousnesses, and further distinguishes: the pair of existence and non-existence, the pair of the conditioned and the unconditioned, the pair of sāsrava and anāsrava, and the pair of apprehending one's own realm and other realms. One should infer by contemplation what is pure and mixed.
