'Nature, seed, and so forth conform according to what is appropriate' comprehensively explains the preceding three lines. This means that among the preceding three lines, judging according to what is appropriate, nature, seed, and so forth cannot be treated uniformly. There are cases where nature and realm conform [to the mind], while the seed does not conform. There are cases where nature and seed conform [to the mind], while the realm does not conform. There are cases where realm and seed conform [to the mind], while the nature does not conform. There are cases where all three conform, and cases where none conform. For instance, when the eighth [consciousness] apprehends the divine eye and ear, the nature conforms, while seed and realm both do not conform. Question: When the indeterminate fifth and sixth [consciousnesses] apprehend the spheres of the five sense-objects and attain the self-characteristic, their nature does not conform to the mind. Why then does the nature of the eighth conform to the mind? Answer: The eighth is the root, the rest are the branches. Furthermore, the essence of the fifth and sixth consciousnesses pervades the three natures, whereas the eighth consciousness in the causal stage is solely indeterminate. As when the causal seventh apprehends the eighth, the nature is the same or not the same, communicating to subjective consciousness and underlying basis; the realm is the same while the seed is not the same—such cases as these can be known through reflection. Furthermore, when the seventh apprehends the eighth, subsuming the image to conform to the underlying substance, it is unobstructed; it cannot conform to the eighth in being ripened; hence it is said, 'conform according to what is appropriate.' Furthermore, making a fourfold distinction, there is that which is a nature-sphere that does not conform to the mind, and also a solitary shadow that solely conforms to the seeing: namely, when the sixth scattered mind apprehends concurrently with the five, and right at this time apprehends hare's horns and so forth, as well as the eighth consciousness mind-king, the nature-sphere does not conform to the mind, whereas the mental factors are solitary shadows that solely conform to the seeing, their image-parts being provisional and lacking distinct seeds.
