First, recounting variant interpretations: one explanation has five gates: 1. Subsuming the false into the real; 2. Subsuming signs into consciousness; 3. Subordinating the nominal to the real; 4. Determining the essence through the three dharmas; 5. Presenting the essence through dharmic enumeration. Another says that the Tripiṭaka Master expanded them into eight gates, opening two gates for each of the preceding three gates. That is: 1. Subsuming the false into the real; 2. The differentiation between the real and the false; the other two are understood by analogy. Another explains six gates: 1. The five dharmas, intrinsic nature, and essence (the five dharmas of mind, mental factors, etc.); 2. The distinction among the three characteristics (the doctrines of the three categories); 3. Subsuming the referent into the name (all phenomena subsumed under what is perfumed by nominal expression); 4. Subsuming the nominal into the real; 5. Subsuming the inferior into the superior (mind and consciousness); 6. Subsuming signs into their nature.
