The *Cheng weishi lun* states: 'Furthermore, the three [guṇas] are specific, while the mahat and the rest are general.' Below, in collectively refuting the twenty-four truths, there are five sections. As the commentary divides them: first, the refutation by analogy between essence and characteristics; second, the refutation by [showing that] when transformed, they are like the original; third, the refutation by [showing that] essence is lost along with characteristics; fourth, the refutation that by analogy between the general and the specific, there should not be one and three; fifth, the refutation that each possesses the three essences. Within the fifth section, it first restates their thesis and then refutes it. The refutation again has five parts: first, the refutation that the general characteristic should be threefold; second, the refutation that the three things are not distinct; third, the refutation that one guṇa could accomplish it; fourth, the refutation that the essence should not be one; fifth, the refutation of the contradiction of multiple kinds. These correspond sequentially to the divisions in the commentary.
